Attorney Bryan has been part of the team at DT Ward, PC since 2011. She works with clients in a broad range of areas to design and execute IP strategies that would support the clients’ objectives through patent drafting and prosecution, patentability, freedom to operate analysis, due diligence, portfolio expansion and development, portfolio management, and trademark protection. Jen focuses primarily in the areas of nucleic acid-based therapy, gene therapy, bioinformatics and immuno-oncology therapies.
Attorney Bryan received her undergraduate degree at the University of Connecticut, graduating with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. While at UCONN, she worked with the United States Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Development Laboratory (CRREL) researching the dissolution of explosive and propellant residues on military training ranges. Jen received her J.D. and LL.M.-IP from the University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center).

Attorney Sullivan joined the firm of DT Ward, PC in 2012 as a Technical Specialist, becoming a Patent Agent later that year and earning his law degree in 2017 from the University of New Hampshire School of Law in Concord, New Hampshire. Dr. Sullivan holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry with over 10 years of experience in biomedical research in the fields of cardiovascular biology and neurodegenerative disease biology.
Before joining the firm, Attorney Sullivan worked as a Health Science Specialist at the Bedford Department of Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center where he was awarded the VISN1 Career Development Award to conduct research in the field of neurodegenerative disease. Prior to his work at the VA, Chris was a Laboratory Technician, PhD Candidate, and Postdoctoral Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine in the department of Biochemistry, where he was awarded his PhD in 2008.

Dr. Jia is a registered patent agent who focuses on patent prosecution in the areas of biotechnology and medical science. She assists clients in managing patent portfolios and developing their IP strategies. Her experience includes due diligence searches, opinions on freedom-to-operate, and drafting and prosecuting patent applications for several technologies, including detection devices, diagnostic assays, immune-oncology, genetic engineering, nucleic acids and antibodies. Her postdoctoral research at Children’s Hospital Boston included studying cranial motor neuron degeneration and intracellular transportation.

Ms. Zhu is a patent agent at the firm. She received a Master of Science degree in organic chemistry from Purdue University in May 2008. In graduate school, Heng conducted research on functional gold nano materials, in particular polyethylene glycol-coated gold surfaces as protein-resistant materials.
Prior to joining DT Ward, PC, Ms. Zhu worked as a Patent Analyst, prosecuting patent applications in the areas of polymers and paints, fuel cells, and medical devices. She also worked as a Patent Classifier contractor for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office classifying patents and pre-grant publications in the polypeptide/protein, fuel cell, and chemical reactor areas. Ms. Zhu is fluent in mandarin Chinese.

Debi has been a patent paralegal for 15 years, and has over 25 years experience in the legal field. Dr. Kopeikina has been with DT Ward, PC since July 2015. Beginning as a technical specialist and now working as a Patent agent. Kathy received a BA in Neuroscience at Bates College. Afterwards, she spent two years in the Biochemistry Department at Boston University working on heart disease. Kathy then joined a combined MS/PhD program in Biomedical Forensics then Anatomy & Neurobiology, respectively, also at BU. A training grant brought her to the lab of Dr. Brad Hyman at MGH where she stayed for the duration of her PhD, studying the role of tau in Alzheimer Disease. After her PhD, Kathy completed a short post-doc at Northwestern University in Chicago, in the lab of Dr. Peter Penzes, studying molecular mechanisms in dendritic spines in the context of psychiatric diseases.

Sonya joined DT Ward, PC in 2015 as a Patent Paralegal, and has over 19 years of experience in patent prosecution. She assists with all stages of the patent prosecution process for U.S., International Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and foreign patent applications, including preparing and filing documents and interacting with domestic and foreign associates.
Before joining DT Ward, PC, Sonya worked as an in-house patent paralegal for the USDA, Agricultural Research Service.

Dr. Balakrishnan joined the DT Ward, PC team in 2016. She is an expert in the field of cancer research and applies her insights from the lab setting to the field of IP Law in support of the firm’s clients. She drafts patent applications, performs intellectual property landscape analyses and crafts corporate portfolio strategies for startup biotech companies in the fields of cancer, immunotherapy and gene therapy.
Dr. Balakrishnan earned her B.S. degree in Zoology from the University of Madras, India. She earned her doctorate in Genetics, Genomics and Development from the University of Rochester in the laboratory of Dr. Hartmut Land. There, her work concentrated on the identification of molecular vulnerabilities in cancer, downstream of oncogenic mutations using genomic approaches, transgenic mouse models and confocal microscopy.
Before joining DT Ward, PC, Dr. Balakrishnan was a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry, where she identified proteins that regulate lysosome function and studied the efficacy of lysosome-targeted therapeutic strategies in pancreatic cancer.

Attorney Hanson has over 10 years of experience as a chemical patent practitioner. Before joining DT Ward, PC, he served as in-house patent counsel for a chemical technology and manufacturing company, and spent several years working as a chemical patent analyst. His legal experience includes advising corporate executives on IP protection strategies, extensive patent drafting and prosecution experience, conducting freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses, patent enforcement strategy and litigation due diligence, review of transactional documents including non-disclosure and non-assertion agreements, and other general IP protection projects.
Mark has a broad scientific literacy from his education and work experience. Attorney McMahon joined DT Ward, PC as a Patent Attorney in 2019. He serves clients across a range of disciplines, including gene therapeutics, antibodies, vaccines, fusion peptides, medical diagnostics and medical devices. In his practice, Mr. McMahon works closely with scientists and engineers to describe and claim client technical innovations and to develop U.S. and international patent filing strategies. Once client patent applications are filed, he represents inventors and advocates for their intellectual property rights before the U.S. Patent Office, drafting responses to Office Actions and tuning strategy according to clients’ directions and needs. For international applications, Sam coordinates patent application prosecution strategy with foreign associates handling counterpart applications worldwide.
In addition to patent application preparation and prosecution, Attorney McMahon performs patent landscape reviews, intellectual property due diligence, and freedom to operate analyses, and advises clients with licensing and collaboration agreements.

After finishing her Ph.D., Kalyani was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Pittsburgh and Tufts University where she worked on medicinal chemistry developing the next generation of cancer treatments and antibiotics. She also briefly led a university start-up to commercialize innovative medical instrumentation.

Dr. Tressler started at DT Ward, PC in October of 2020. He received a BS in Biology from West Virginia University. After 2 years of post-graduate study there he moved to Texas A&M to pursue a PhD in zoology, with a focus in neurobiology. He worked with Dr. Mike Smotherman on the neural control of vocalization in bats; employing research techniques from areas including neuropharmacology, electrophysiology, behavioral ethology, and neuroanatomy. His dissertation described the development of a model for the study of Parkinsonian dysarthria in bats, demonstrating the role of the Basal Ganglia in mammalian vocalization as well as a likely cause underlying the dysarthria symptoms.
Jedediah completed a post-doc at The University of Oregon, in the lab of Dr. Nathan Tublitz, studying the neural control of color change behavior in cuttlefish as well as working on sequencing the complete genome of the common cuttlefish.
